Mindset Books for Entrepreneurs

Entrepreneurship can be hard. There’s no way around this fact.

Switching our mindsets from employee to entrepreneur, making bold and daring actions to grow our business, deciding to actually work instead of procrastinating… all of it can be tough to do. And entrepreneurship can be a lonely path, too.

Keeping yourself optimistic and ready for the path ahead is important, and the list of books below can help you do that.

Full disclosure: I do receive a small commission for each item purchased through the links below. That said, I absolutely believe in the value these items will bring to you and your loved ones, and I hope you’ll find them as fun and useful as I do!

1. Atomic Habits: An Easy & Proven Way to Build Good Habits & Break Bad Ones

Habits make or break a business, even the small ones you don’t think about. James Clear, a leading expert on habit formation, wrote this book to help others learn how to create better habits, break old ones, and master behaviors that will lead to success. Clear breaks everything down into simple, effective strategies and explains why we do what we do. Everyone, from entrepreneurs to medal-winning Olympians, has used this book to create a better life for themselves. If you’ve got habits you want to change, and haven’t been able to yet, then this book is a must-read!

2. Permission to Leap: The Six-Phase Journey to Bring Your Vision to Life

My very first book! I wrote this book to help entrepreneurs like you take the leap to start creating the vision you see for yourself and your life. It can be incredibly scary to actually take the leap and start taking action, but unless you leap, you’ll never see your dreams and goals come to life. Permission to Leap will walk you through the journey from taking the leap to landing on the other side.

3. Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself: How to Lose Your Mind and Create a New One

Dr. Joe Dispenza is a well-known scientist who studies epigenetics (how environments affect how your genes work), quantum physics, and neuroscience. He combines these fields of science with spirituality and teaches others to do the same. Though he’s the author of many books, this particular one was published in 2012 and covers how we can go about changing who we are. In any area of life. He guides you through the biology of your mind and your body, and then gives you the step-by-step tools you need to change anything you want and create the future you want. Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself is a phenomenal book to help you become the entrepreneur you’re meant to be.

4. Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don’t Know

Adam Grant, organizational psychologist, wrote this book to help people learn something new: how to rethink and unlearn. In today’s world, we often spend too much time listening to those who agree with us, find ideas that match what we believe, and argue our point of view instead of listening and learning. We stubbornly hold onto our intelligence, refusing to see any other way of thinking, limiting who we are and what we can do. Grant argues that “we can embrace the joy of being wrong, bring nuance to charged conversations, and build schools, workplaces, and communities of lifelong learners.” This book will show you how to create a mindset of learning, something entrepreneurs should always have, and become more flexible in your thinking.

5. The Miracle Morning (Updated and Expanded Edition): The Not-So-Obvious Secret Guaranteed to Transform Your Life (Before 8AM) (Miracle Morning Book Series)

If you’ve ever wanted to do more with your mornings, check out this book! I’ve known the author, Hal Elrod, for a long time, and when I picked up this book (and actually implemented its advice), my life changed. Now, to be completely honest, I don’t do everything exactly as Hal says to do in this book, but I encourage you to try it out and then tweak what doesn’t work for you. In The Miracle Morning, Hal walks readers through his S.A.V.E.R.S. method, a simple, effective step-by-step process, where you’ll spend only six minutes on each item and transform your mornings. If you want to get up and start your day on the right foot, I can’t recommend this book enough!

6. The Power of Self-Discipline: 5-Minute Exercises to Build Self-Control, Good Habits, and Keep Going When You Want to Give Up (Live a Disciplined Life)

Who wouldn’t rather sit on the couch watching TV and doing basically nothing all day? While this is good to do as a break or as a day of rest, doing it constantly won;t help you create the life you actually want. The author, Peter Hollins, has been studying psychology and human behavior for years, and has helped hundreds of people unlock their full potential. He believes self-discipline isn’t grinding it out 24/7, but rather it’s about working smarter and using the tools you have. In this book, he shows you how to automate your willpower and become more self-disciplined so you can accomplish more!

8. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck: A Counterintuitive Approach to Living a Good Life

Mark Manson is a no-nonsense, no-holds-barred author and blogger. In this wildly popular book, he gives a new take on mentality. Instead of just embracing positivity and having an optimistic mindset, he argues that we need to embrace reality. Human beings are flawed. Everyone has limitations, and Manson says that we should embrace what our own limitations are. Figure out what you actually care about instead of trying to care about everything, or even just making money, care about what you do with your life. If you want a good, no-nonsense smack upside the head, then pick up this book.

8. Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap and Others Don’t

This is an older book (published in 2001), but the information in it is still incredibly valuable. Jim Collins already knew that there were great companies that had stood the test of time, but he wanted to see if it was possible for long-term mediocre companies to go from, as the title says, good to great. If so, how? Collins and his team looked at the great companies and what they were doing, and they found key similarities between all of them. Those findings are in this book, and if you want your own business to be sustainable and have long-term success, then you need to read this book!

9. Untamed

Glennon Doyle is a well-known activist, speaker, author, and champion of female empowerment. In Untamed, her third memoir, she not only shares her own life story, she also talks about what it means to be a woman in today’s world. How we often hide who we really are underneath the surface. Sometimes very deep under the surface. And this can lead us to make choices that aren’t good for us, that can take us down dark paths. Instead, Doyle says that there is an untamed woman inside each of us who needs to be let loose, one who doesn’t just do as she’s told because that’s what she’s supposed to do. It is this untamed woman we all need to strive to be for the betterment of ourselves, our families, our businesses, and our world.

10. The Mountain Is You: Transforming Self-Sabotage Into Self-Mastery

Anyone guilty of self-sabotage? I know I am. This book is all about self-sabotage, from why we do it to how to stop doing it and everything in between. Human beings hate change (most of the time), and we’ll resist tooth and nail, even if the change is good for us. Brianna Wiest, the author, says that if we want to stop sabotaging everything we do, then we need to build emotional intelligence, remove damaging habits, and learn to act as our highest potential self. We need to scale our own internal mountains and do the deep work to release old wounds and build resilience. If you’ve been making choices in your business that have been self-sabotaging, and you want to make new, better decisions, then pick up this book!
