entrepreneur podcast

As entrepreneurs, we often hear the same tired narrative: “You can’t have financial security without a corporate job.” It’s a belief that’s been drilled into our heads since childhood, and it’s one that keeps many of us from fully embracing our entrepreneurial dreams. But I’m here to tell you that this narrative is nothing more than a limiting belief – one that’s holding you back from creating the thriving, profitable business you deserve.

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room: insurance, retirement, and steady paychecks. These are the golden handcuffs that keep many would-be entrepreneurs tethered to their 9-to-5 jobs. But what if I told you that not only can you have all of these things as an entrepreneur, but you can often have them on better terms than you would as an employee?

Debunking the Corporate Security Myth

First things first: let’s dismantle this idea that corporate jobs are the only path to financial security. As someone who’s been in the entrepreneurial game for 17 years, I can tell you unequivocally that this is bullshit.

Health Insurance: My corporation pays $370 a month for my health insurance. That’s right – my business, not me personally. This means it’s a tax-deductible expense for my company, and I get comprehensive coverage.

Life Insurance: Again, my corporation foots the bill. At $150 a month, I have peace of mind knowing my loved ones are protected.

Hospital Insurance: For a mere $10 a month, I have coverage that pays me if I’m hospitalized and unable to work. It’s an extra layer of protection that ensures my income doesn’t completely dry up if I’m out of commission.

Retirement: I’m in the process of setting up a retirement account coupled with a living benefits policy. This will cost about $300 a month, again paid by my business.

All in, we’re looking at less than $1,000 a month for comprehensive coverage and future planning. And here’s the kicker: it’s all paid for by my business, not out of my personal pocket.

The Mindset Shift: Your Business Should Support You

Now, I can already hear some of you saying, “But Bri, my business can’t afford that!” And to that, I say: if your business can’t generate an extra $1,000 a month to take care of you, we need to have a serious conversation about your business model.

Your business should not be a bottomless pit into which you pour all your energy without getting anything in return. The energy flow should be reciprocal. If it’s not, something needs to change.

Steps to Create a Business That Supports You

  • Get Clear on Your Goals: What does success look like for you? Do you want to retire at 50? 60? Never? Define your destination.
  • Eliminate Limiting Beliefs: Challenge the narratives you’ve been fed about what’s possible for entrepreneurs. If you believe you can’t have financial security as a business owner, guess what? You won’t.
  • Take Action: Meet with experts who can help you set up the right structures. Talk to insurance agents, financial advisors, and accountants. Get yourself on payroll. Yes, you can (and should) be an employee of your own business.
  • Embody Your Future Self: Who is the version of you that has all these systems in place? How does she think? How does she make decisions? Start embodying that person now.

The Reality of Entrepreneurial Financial Security

Here’s the truth: as an entrepreneur, you have more control over your financial security than any corporate employee. You’re not at the mercy of layoffs, budget cuts, or corporate restructuring. You have the power to create a business that not only thrives but takes care of you in the process.

Is it easy? No. Does it require a shift in mindset and approach? Absolutely. But is it worth it? A thousand times yes.
