The Identity-Goal Connection
You’ve heard the saying, “What got you here won’t get you there,” right? Well, it’s not just about what you do – it’s about who you are. The person you are right now, with your current thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors, isn’t the same person who will achieve those big, scary goals you’ve set for yourself.
Think about it. If you were already fully aligned with that massive vision you have for your business, wouldn’t you already have achieved it?
The Radio Frequency Metaphor
Let me break this down with a metaphor that might help. Imagine your goal as a radio frequency being broadcast into the world. To receive that frequency – to achieve that goal – you need to tune yourself to match it.
If you’re tuned to 92.5 FM, you can’t pick up a signal broadcasting at 101.3 FM. It’s the same with your goals. If your identity isn’t aligned with your aspirations, you’re not going to pick up the frequency of success you’re aiming for.
Real-World Identity Shifts
This isn’t just theory – I’ve lived it, and I’ve seen it in action with my clients. Let me share a few examples:
Becky’s Breakthrough
Becky, a graduate of my Foundry program, didn’t see herself as a real business owner when we first met. She treated her work as a hobby. But when she shifted her identity and started seeing herself as a serious businesswoman, guess what happened? She achieved her entire annual revenue goal in just 90 days.
Stephanie’s Transformation
Another Foundry graduate, Stephanie, tripled her monthly revenue. The key? She became more confident in sharing her prices, reaching out to potential clients, and advocating for herself as a business owner.
The 50/50 Rule of Success
Here’s a truth bomb for you: success is about 50% strategy and 50% identity. You can have the most brilliant business plan in the world, but if you’re not embodying the identity of someone who can execute that plan, you’re going to struggle.
On the flip side, you can do all the mindset work in the world, but without a solid strategy, you’re just spinning your wheels.
Bridging the Identity Gap
So, how do you start this identity work? Here’s a simple exercise:
- Envision your future self: Who is the version of you that has already achieved your big goal?
- Identify the gap: What’s the difference between that future you and the current you?
- Take daily steps: Ask yourself every day, “How can I close this gap just a little bit more?”
The Power of Community
