entrepreneur podcast balance
As entrepreneurs, we often hear the message that success means scaling our businesses to seven figures, working around the clock, and sacrificing everything else in our lives. But what if there was another way? What if we could build thriving businesses that actually support the lives we want to live?

I recently had an eye-opening conversation with three incredible female entrepreneurs who have done just that. They shared their journeys of letting go of societal expectations, reconnecting with their core values, and creating businesses that truly align with their desired lifestyles.

Join me as I speak candidly with Jessica Belsky, Shenna Jean and Jordan Gill to learn how each of us has built a business to fit our lives:

Here are some of the lessons we discussed in this episode of the ‘Big Goal Energy’ entrepreneur podcast:

The Pressure to Scale

One common thread in our discussion was the intense pressure we all felt to constantly grow and scale our businesses. As Jessica Belsky shared, “I was doing that scale to seven figures driving up the mountain. Why? I don’t know, but because I was told to kind of thing.”

This push to scale often led to:

  • Working 15+ hour days
  • Building large teams with hefty overhead costs
  • Feeling disconnected from our core purpose
  • Neglecting our personal lives and wellbeing

We found ourselves chasing arbitrary revenue goals without stopping to ask if that growth actually aligned with the lives we wanted to create.

The Breaking Point

For each of us, there came a moment when we realized something had to change. Sheena Jean described her breaking point:

“I had pushed off every single vacation that I had. I was taking one day off a week to, like, drive down to Tucson, get some body work and chiropractic work done to, like, barely stitch me together, and then come back into it.” – Shenna Jean

We all reached a point where the cost of “success” became too high. Our bodies, relationships, and spirits were suffering. We knew we needed to make a radical change.

Redefining Success on Our Own Terms

The turning point came when we gave ourselves permission to step back and redefine what success truly meant for us. This often involved:

Letting go of arbitrary revenue goalsDownsizing our teams and overheadReconnecting with our core values and purposePrioritizing our wellbeing and personal lives

Aligning with Core Values

For me, this meant getting crystal clear on my top core values – with freedom being at the very top of the list. I realized my business model needed to support that value, not work against it.

Jordan Gill shared a similar experience: “I focused on my healing, and my healing was so much about my spiritual journey, and it was also about this deep emotional work, like, deep shadow work.”

By reconnecting with our deepest values and priorities, we were able to reimagine what our ideal businesses could look like.

Embracing a New Mindset

A key shift for all of us was moving away from the “hustle and grind” mentality. Jessica beautifully summed up her new approach:

“I hired God. Like, I made God my co-founder, honestly… I recognized that I had been just taking on so much myself versus opening up to a higher power that infinitely knows better than what I’m doing.” – Shenna Jean

Creating Businesses that Support Our Desired Lifestyles

Once we shifted our mindsets and priorities, we were able to redesign our businesses to truly support the lives we wanted to live. Some key strategies included:

  • Focusing on profitability over revenue: We prioritized creating sustainable, profitable businesses rather than chasing arbitrary revenue goals.
  • Embracing flexibility: We built business models that allowed for more freedom and flexibility in our schedules.
  • Aligning our offers with our strengths: We focused on creating products and services that leveraged our unique gifts and brought us joy.
  • Setting clear boundaries: We established firm boundaries around our time and energy to protect our wellbeing.

The Power of Letting Go

One of the most powerful lessons we all learned was the importance of being willing to let go. This might mean:

Closing down a business that no longer serves youStepping away from a successful program or offerDownsizing your team or operations

While these decisions can feel scary in the moment, we all found that letting go created space for new opportunities and growth.

Embracing Creativity and Play

By releasing the pressure to constantly scale, we rediscovered the joy of creativity and play in our businesses. Jordan shared:

“What’s fun? Like, what’s going to bring me joy? What is going to continue to allow me to create solutions for the problems that I love solving?”

The Ripple Effect of Choosing Ourselves

What we’ve all discovered is that when we choose to build businesses that truly support our desired lifestyles, everyone benefits. Our clients receive higher quality work from us because we’re showing up as our best selves. Our families and relationships thrive because we have more time and energy to invest in them. And perhaps most importantly, we model a new way of doing business for other entrepreneurs.

By sharing our stories and experiences, we hope to inspire other women to question the traditional narratives around business success. You have permission to create a business that aligns with your values, supports your wellbeing, and allows you to live the life you truly desire.

Remember, true success isn’t about reaching a certain revenue goal or team size. It’s about creating a business that allows you to show up as your best self, make a meaningful impact, and live a life you love.

What would your business look like if you designed it to support your ideal lifestyle? I encourage you to take some time to reflect on this question and see what insights emerge. You might be surprised at the possibilities that open up when you give yourself permission to redefine success on your own terms.
