In a time when people all over the world seem like they’re on a constant race to beat deadlines, business owners struggle to juggle everything to achieve a semblance of work-life balance.

The goal of striking a healthy work-life balance is to ensure that you are putting in the time you need to succeed in your business while also prioritizing your personal life, and making time for rest, relaxation, and renewal.

Why Work-Life Balance Matters

As a leader, you need to be able to give your best effort to every aspect of your life, from planning and running your business, to taking care of yourself, to spending time with your family, to keeping up with outside interests, to keeping commitments to friends and community.

It’s possible to have a successful career and a happy, healthy personal life and still make time for the things you enjoy and that make you feel whole. That said, if you try to squeeze too much into your day, you’ll end up at the end of the month wondering why you’re so exhausted.

So when you achieve work-life balance, you’ll end up feeling happier, more satisfied, and more energetic, and you’ll notice that you have more energy to use for propelling your ventures forward.

It’s like my OrangeTheory coach said this week, “We have to rest and pull back in order to be able to go all out.”

How to Work on Your Work-Life Balance

Tip #1: The Most Important Skill to Master is the Art of Prioritizing Tasks

It’s easy to get lost in the details of your day and lose sight of the bigger picture. One of the most important ways to master your work-life balance is to develop the skill of prioritizing tasks.

What does it mean to prioritize tasks? It’s about identifying which tasks will produce the most value over time. This is the ultimate goal of effective time management: to help you attain the most important outcomes in your life (ideally, with the least amount of work).

When you don’t have enough time, you may end up feeling stressed and rushed, but if you’ve managed your priorities well, you’ll feel energized, motivated, and more successful.

Tip #2: Work Smart to Maximize Your Productivity

Work smarter, not harder! There are many techniques that you can use to be more productive and to maximize your time. For one, learn to set goals and to break larger projects down into smaller, achievable, and more satisfying tasks. #HowDoYouEatAnElephant

This is exactly what I teach with my ‘Get Shit Done’ system. When you consciously plan what you want to achieve in the next month, you’ll be clear on exactly what actions to take today. Not to mention, you’ll  be excited to tackle your goals, and you’ll know exactly how to best spend your time to achieve your objectives.

Tip #3: Identify and Respect Your Boundaries

Some days are busier than others; that’s just the nature of running your own business. To help manage your energy during these times, look for ways to minimize stress by avoiding unreasonable deadlines, unnecessary meetings, and other sources of pressure. Saying NO in your business is as (if not more) important than saying YES.

Take the time to be mindful of your energy levels, and avoid spreading yourself too thin across too many different commitments.

Remember that even if you’re excited about a project or new venture, there will be days when you just don’t feel like working on it. You may feel overwhelmed with so many other things to do, or maybe you just aren’t in the mood to tackle something at the moment.

The key here is self-care. Don’t feel guilty or ashamed if you decide to postpone a task or two; just do it! Schedule a time when you’ll come back to it and you’ll be more likely to enjoy working on it again.

The Bottom Line: How Work-Life Balance Is the Secret to Long-Term Success

If you’re feeling frustrated, unhappy, or even burned out, that’s a good indicator that you need to take a closer look at how you’re managing the demands of your life. If you’re not feeling energized when you wake up in the morning, you’re not going to be as productive at work, and you’re not going to enjoy the other things in your life.

To that end, having a healthy work-life balance is the secret to success for business owners.
